| Version One: The magician appears on a dimly lit stage, before a brilliant image on the giant screen. Magically plucking a single dot of light, a "Pixel" from the large screen, and thus causing the large screen to go suddenly dark, he explains that every image on every video display in the world begins as a single Pixel. Pixels have personalities. Tempest offers to introduce an audience member to this particular Pixel. Moving towards the audience, the Pixel is seen to hover in the air between Tempest's hands. He places it on one shoulder, and it dances across to the other one. He has an audience member whisper something to the Pixel. Tempest tosses the Pixel into the air, where it hovers for a moment, then darts back to the screen from which it originated. As the Pixel strikes the giant screen, it bursts into an image, or writes a word, describing what the audience member has whispered to it. This video image can be an animation, or can be typography describing a particular theme of the meeting at hand … whatever best serves your particular purpose.
Alternative Versions: Pixel is infinitely malleable. Tempest can refer to a number of words or images on the large screen, and pick each one off into a single pixel, then toss the whole mass of lights back into the screen, where they coalesce into a single large image…the sum of all the parts he has plucked off.
Another possibility is that when the pixel is tossed back into the large screen, it bursts into a large shower of sparks, through which is seen the silhouette of a person. The person can then “walk out” of the screen and onto the stage. A perfect introduction for someone special…who can appear with a spark or two still on their shoulder, with which THEY can do a small magical bit before launching into their particular presentation.
Many other possibilities exist for this piece…Tempest can use the light to activate objects on the screen, or can paint images with it. It can fly either into or out of the screen. It can multiply into many dots of light, and then each can go it’s separate way. We can give individual Pixel’s different personalities: playful, active, lethargic, threatening…whatever the situation may call for.
