Marco discovered this amazing artifact on a trip through his “virtual magician” archives -- a very real set of secret data gathered in an electronic and paper library by himself and his team, consisting of many of the “world’s greatest mysteries.” It was shear luck that we later discovered that the artifact was for sale at an antiquities auction, and Marco was able to purchase the original.
Since that time, the “Haunted Table” has become a favorite at Marco’s performances, both on stage and on television. In performance the table is exhibit -- a simple table, unadorned except by a short tablecloth – while its history is given on the large screen. Marco moves forward, and, as some suitably eerie music plays, he causes the table to float slowly into the air and mysteriously about the stage for a few moments.
He then invites a suitable audience member on stage with him to experience the phenomenon up close. He places the audience member across the table from him and they each lightly grasp the two corners of the short tablecloth nearest to them. Music begins again, and the table once again slowly rises and floats about, as the two of them continue to hold the cloth. Marco invites his guest to look beneath the cloth, which they do, and report seeing nothing out of the ordinary. The table floats once again gently back to the stage…Marco thanks his mystified guest and his audience as he receives their applause.
Because the piece is extremely portable and can be performed surrounded, we sometimes perform it not as part of Marco’s stage show, but as a “guerilla magic” project – on a street corner or in a convention lobby, for example. In this setting, it never fails to draw a crowd and inspire widespread amazement. It can be fun, sometimes when we are included as part of a multi-day meeting, to stage this early in the course of events, with video tape rolling. The video created then becomes a fun part of the “summary video” prepared for the end of the event, and which is sometimes distributed to attendees as their souvenir of the event. People’s responses to the effect are always most amusing.
